  • What are deductibles, coinsurance, and copays?
Deductible This is the amount you pay for health care services before your health insurance begins to pay. How it works: If your plan's deductible is $1,500, you'll pay 100% of your eligible health care costs until the bills total $1,500. After that you share the cost with your plan by paying either co-insurance or a co-pay. Coinsurance Coinsurance is your share of the costs of a health service. It's usually figured as a percentage of the amount allowed by insurance companies to be charged for a service. You start paying coinsurance after you've paid your plan's deductible. Here's how it works: You've paid $1,500 in health care expenses and met your deductible. When you go to a therapist, instead of paying all costs, you and your plan share the cost. For example your plan pays 70%. The 30% you pay is your coinsurance. Copay A copay is a fixed amount you pay for a health service, usually when you receive the service. The amount can vary depending on your plan and the type of service. How it works: Your plan determines what your copay is for different types of services, and when you have one. You may have a copay before you finish paying towards your deductible. You may also have a copay after you've finished paying your deductible, and when you owe coinsurance. *Payment of coinsurance and/or copays are due at the end of session unless prior arrangements have been made with your therapist.
  • What is a Good Faith Estimate?
You have a right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. PURSUANT TO THE NO SURPRISES ACT (HR133, TITLE 45 SECTION 149.610), THE GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE PROVIDES A CURRENT OR PROSPECTIVE CLIENT WITH A “GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE” (GFE) OF EXPECTED CHARGES FOR SERVICES TO BE PROVIDED. Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, or how to dispute a bill, see your Estimate, or visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
